According to a report in The Harvard Crimson, former President Joe Biden praised Harvard University for its stand against the Trump administration. During a Wednesday special seminar at Harvard’s Kennedy School, Biden praised the university’s resistance to federal pressure, calling it a sign of true leadership.
Harvard stepped up in a way no one else has,” Joe Biden reportedly told a small group of students at the off-the-record event. “You should be really thankful.” Two students present at the event shared their remarks with The Crimson.
When asked by a student reporter whether Harvard should sue the federal government, Biden said he supported the university’s actions but did not call for a legal fight. “I think Harvard should just do what it’s doing — lifting everybody up,” he responded.
Former President Barack Obama has also praised the university in a post he shared on his X, saying that Harvard “is a model for other institutions of higher learning.” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Massachusetts Governor Maura T. Healey have also publicly supported Harvard.

The private seminar came weeks before Harvard’s recent spat with the Trump administration. The tension over the university’s refusal to comply with certain federal requirements, including ending its diversity and inclusion programs and sharing detailed data on international students.
