A Canadian citizen has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of illegally registering and casting ballots in U.S. elections. Prosecutors said the man, identified as 69-year-old Denis Bouchard, voted in federal elections in 2022 and 2024 despite never obtaining American citizenship.

According to court filings, Bouchard falsely certified that he was a U.S. citizen on voter registration forms in North Carolina and took part in elections in New Hanover and Pender counties. Authorities said the charges carry potential prison time and other penalties if he is convicted.

U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle said the case demonstrates that even a single unlawful vote undermines the democratic process. The investigation was carried out by the FBI with assistance from the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
