Republican leaders in the House are moving to advance a stopgap funding measure that would keep the government open through January 31, 2025, in order to avoid a shutdown set to begin October 1. Majority Leader Steve Scalise said the proposal would maintain the current federal spending levels while allowing for possible additions such as disaster relief funding as well. according to the Reuters
The plan, described by GOP leaders as a “clean” continuing resolution, would extend funding without major policy changes. Mandatory programs including Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid would remain unaffected under the measure.
Democrats criticized the approach, with Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, calling it “an extreme request.” She argued that spending decisions should be made through the regular appropriations process rather than short-term extensions.
With the deadline approaching, Republicans face the challenge of securing enough support to pass the bill, particularly in the Senate where 60 votes are required. Party leaders said they expect further negotiations with Democrats before an agreement can be reached.
