Kamala Harris offers weak support for Zohran Mamdani: ‘Sure’

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has offered limited support for Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City. Speaking on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow show, Harris was asked directly if she supported Mamdani and replied, “He’s the Democratic candidate, and he should be supported… Sure.”
Her comments were seen as cautious, quickly shifting focus to highlight other Democratic mayoral candidates across the country, including Barbara Drummond in Alabama and Helena Moreno in New Orleans. The remarks suggested an effort to support Mamdani while avoiding a full endorsement.
The endorsement comes as some top Democrats remain wary. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have yet to speak out about their support,
While New York Governor Kathy Hochul has already endorsed Mamdani. The split reflects broader tensions within the party’s progressive and moderate wings.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, built his campaign on affordable housing, rent control, and outspoken criticism of Israeli government policies.
His candidacy has energized progressive activists but has also sparked controversy within the Democratic establishment.
Harris’ cautious endorsement reflects Mamdani’s growing acceptance within national Democratic circles, even as questions remain about how his progressive agenda will pan out beyond New York City.
