Senior U.S. officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff convened with representatives of Ukraine in Florida on Sunday as Moscow-hosted discussions with Russia loom later this week.
The Ukrainian delegation — led by Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine’s Security and Defence Council — travelled to the United States after the resignation of Ukraine’s previous chief negotiator, following a domestic corruption scandal.
According to a senior U.S. official, the Florida sessions aim to refine Washington’s proposed peace framework, originally drafted earlier this month, ahead of upcoming talks in Moscow with Russian leadership.
Rubio said the United States remains committed to helping secure a resolution that preserves Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and long-term prosperity.
U.S. involvement signals an intensifying diplomatic push from Washington, following earlier back-and-forth negotiations involving Witkoff and other administration representatives with both Ukrainian and Russian parties.
The meeting in Florida reflects growing urgency as Ukrainian officials balance warfront pressures at home with increased international diplomatic activity abroad.
