MLN — 10 JAN 2026: Illinois political leaders intensified calls this weekend for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign or face impeachment following nationwide outrage over a federal immigration enforcement officer’s fatal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis. The statements reflect growing bipartisan pressure within Democratic ranks.

U.S. Representative Robin Kelly, a Democrat from Illinois and candidate for the state’s U.S. Senate seat, announced plans to file articles of impeachment against Noem, accusing her of failing to restrain aggressive federal immigration operations carried out by the Department of Homeland Security.

Support for Noem’s removal also came from other Illinois Democrats, including Rep. Brad Schneider

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker added his voice to the calls, saying Noem’s leadership has contributed to federal enforcement actions that he says have harmed public trust and endangered communities. Critics argue that Noem’s defense of the Minneapolis officer’s actions has deepened tensions.

Although impeachment efforts are unlikely to succeed due to Republican control of Congress, the push underscores heightened national scrutiny of DHS policy and leadership. Lawmakers demanding Noem’s ouster say accountability is essential amid ongoing debates over immigration enforcement
