MLN — 14 JAN 2026: A group of U.S. House Democrats introduced articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Wednesday, with the number of co-sponsors rising to more than 60 lawmakers.
Illinois Democratic Representative Robin Kelly led the effort, unveiling three charges that accuse Noem of obstructing Congress, violating public trust and engaging in self-dealing while overseeing the Department of Homeland Security.
Support for the articles has grown beyond 50 members and could reach about 70 lawmakers, reflecting deep concern among House Democrats.
The impeachment push emerged in the wake of national outrage over a recent fatal shooting involving a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis, which Democrats say underscores broader failures in DHS oversight.
Noem has defended her actions and rejected the impeachment effort as unfounded.
Republicans control the House, making it unlikely the impeachment effort will advance to a vote, but the move marks a rare escalation of formal opposition to a Cabinet secretary tied to immigration enforcement policy.
