MLN — 19 JAN 2026: The Kremlin said on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to join a newly announced “board of peace” established by U.S. President Donald Trump, an initiative intended to oversee a ceasefire in Gaza and broader conflict resolution efforts. The claim has not yet been confirmed by Washington.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow is reviewing the proposal and is seeking clarification from U.S. officials before deciding whether Putin would participate. He said Russia wants to understand the scope and purpose of the body before responding formally.
The invitation, if confirmed, comes as Russia continues its war in Ukraine, where fighting has shown no signs of easing. Russian officials have repeatedly rejected ceasefire proposals along current front lines, and the conflict remains a major source of tension between Moscow and Western governments.
Peskov also said Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, will attend the World Economic Forum in Davos this week and is expected to meet members of the U.S. delegation. It remains unclear whether the proposed board of peace will be discussed during those meetings.
Initial members announced on Friday include Trump as chair, former UK prime minister Tony Blair, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and World Bank President Ajay Banga. Media reports said invitations were also sent to several foreign leaders, with participation potentially tied to financial contributions.
The reported outreach to Putin has added to debate over Trump’s foreign policy approach, particularly regarding Russia and Ukraine, while also coinciding with heightened tensions between Washington and several European allies over unrelated disputes.
