MLN — 20 JAN 2026: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she raised concerns about Greenland and transatlantic trade during meetings Monday with a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers, stressing that respect for sovereignty is essential to relations between Europe and the United States.

“In Davos, I met with a bipartisan delegation from the United States Congress. We discussed our shared efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” von der Leyen wrote on X. “This process benefits from strong EU–US coordination, from security guarantees to a pathway to prosperity.”

Von der Leyen said she directly addressed President Donald Trump’s push for U.S. control of Greenland, calling the issue central to the transatlantic partnership. “I also addressed the need to unequivocally respect the sovereignty of Greenland and of the Kingdom of Denmark. This is of utmost importance to our transatlantic relationship,” she wrote.

At the same time, she said the European Union remains open to cooperation. “The European Union remains ready to continue working closely with the United States, NATO, and other allies, in close cooperation with Denmark, to advance our shared security interests,” von der Leyen added.

She also warned against escalating trade tensions, describing transatlantic trade and investment as ,a major asset, for both economies and cautioning that tariffs would harm shared interests.

The meetings took place as Trump continues to advocate U.S. acquisition of Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory with strategic significance in the Arctic. Despite opposition from European allies, Trump recently announced plans to impose 10 percent tariffs on goods from eight European countries.

Several members of Congress participating in the discussions are part of a broader bipartisan delegation traveling through Europe this week. Senator Chris Coons of Delaware said Trump’s tariff threats tied to Greenland risk damaging economic ties and weakening NATO unity.

Trump is scheduled to address the World Economic Forum later this week, where Greenland and trade relations are expected to feature prominently.
