Army Orders Military Police to Prepare for Possible Minneapolis Deployment

MLN -22 JAN 2026:The U.S. Army has ordered several dozen additional active-duty soldiers to prepare for a possible deployment to Minneapolis amid protests tied to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement actions, a defense official said Wednesday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans are sensitive, said members of an Army military police brigade based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, have received prepare-to-deploy orders. If activated, the troops would provide support to civil authorities in Minneapolis.

The official emphasized that such standby orders are routine and do not necessarily mean the troops will be deployed.

About 1,500 active-duty soldiers from the Army’s 11th Airborne Division in Alaska have also received similar standby instructions, according to the official.

President Donald Trump has previously threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act, a rarely used 19th-century law that would allow the use of active-duty military forces for domestic law enforcement. The remarks followed protests in Minneapolis that erupted after a federal immigration officer killed resident Renee Good on Jan. 7.

Trump later appeared to walk back the threat, telling reporters there was no reason to invoke the law right now.

“If I needed it, I’d use it,” Trump said. “It’s very powerful.”

Asked about the latest military preparations, which were first reported by MS Now, the Pentagon said it had no information to provide at this time.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, has urged the president not to deploy additional troops. In a statement Tuesday, Walz invited Trump to visit Minnesota and “help restore calm and order and reaffirm that true public safety comes from shared purpose, trust, and respect.”

During his second term, Trump has increasingly used federal forces in U.S. cities, often over objections from state and local officials, as part of immigration and crime enforcement operations.

Last June, Trump deployed federalized National Guard troops to Los Angeles following protests over immigration arrests, eventually sending about 4,000 Guard members and 700 active-duty Marines to protect federal buildings and personnel
