U.S. Braces For Dangerous Winter Storm Threatening Much Of The Country.

MLN -24 JAN 2026:More than 200 million people across the United States were bracing Friday for a powerful winter storm expected to bring heavy snow, ice and dangerously cold temperatures as it moves east, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm is forecast to track from the High Plains and Rockies through the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, creating what the NWS described as “extremely dangerous” conditions. Forecasters warned that subzero temperatures and severe wind chills could pose “a life-threatening risk of hypothermia and frostbite to exposed skin,” .

Snow totals of more than a foot were possible across a wide corridor stretching from Colorado through parts of the central Plains into the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Parts of New York City and surrounding areas could see 10 to 14 inches of snow, while portions of New England could receive up to 17 inches, the NWS said. Wind chills in some regions were expected to fall below minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the Northern Plains.

Governors in at least 16 states, including Texas, Arkansas, Georgia and New York, declared states of emergency ahead of the storm, allowing officials to mobilize resources and National Guard units if needed. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul urged residents to limit travel and prepare for hazardous conditions.

Airlines warned of widespread disruptions, with thousands of flights already canceled for the weekend, according to FlightAware. Transportation officials advised motorists to avoid travel, saying conditions could become nearly impossible during the storm’s peak.
