MLN -24 JAN 2026: Airlines canceled more than 9,000 U.S. flights over the weekend as a powerful winter storm threatened large parts of the country with heavy snow, ice and dangerous cold, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.

As of Saturday, American Airlines led cancellations with 1,546 flights scrubbed between Saturday and Sunday. Southwest Airlines canceled 1,243 flights and Delta Air Lines canceled 911. American said it added 3,000 extra flights between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport, the airline posted on X.

Delta said it canceled flights across Texas and the Southeast, including its Atlanta hub, and into the Northeast. “With Winter Storm Fern approaching, our teams are monitoring conditions and adjusting flight schedules where necessary,” the airline said on X, encouraging customers to rebook at no charge.

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport recorded the highest number of cancellations early Saturday, with 49 flights canceled, according to FlightAware. More than 9,000 additional flights were delayed nationwide.

Roughly 140 million people from New Mexico to New England were under winter storm warnings, the Associated Press reported. The National Weather Service warned of widespread heavy snow and potentially catastrophic ice from east Texas to North Carolina.

Forecasters said some regions could see 24 to 30 inches of snow, with large areas receiving 6 to 12 inches. Widespread freezing rain could lead to power outages, tree damage and dangerous travel, the weather service said.

President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that federal agencies were prepared to respond. “Stay Safe and Stay Warm!” he wrote.
