Minnesotaย Governor Tim Walz considering Senate Run to Replace Retiring Tina Smith

Following Senator Tina Smithโ€™s announcement of her retirement, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is reportedly considering a run for her Senate seat, according to a source close to the governor who spoke withย Politico.

Walz, who served as former Vice President Kamala Harrisโ€™ running mate in the 2024 election, also has the option to seek reelection as governor in 2026. ย His potential Senate bid adds to a growing list of candidates vying for Smithโ€™s soon-to-be-vacant seat.

ย Lieutenant governor Peggy Flanagan has expressed her intentionย to run, ย stating, โ€œI love Minnesota, and my intention is to run for United States Senate and continue to serve the people of this state. Iโ€™ll make a formal announcement later this month.โ€

Other potential candidate include include Rep. Ilhan Omar, whose spokespersonย did not rule out a run, saying, โ€œCongresswoman Omar will be talking with Minnesotans about the future of the Senate seat and DFL party in Minnesota.โ€ Rep. Angie Craig is also reportedly considering a bid, with encouragement from both state and national leaders. Additionally, Attorney General Keith Ellison and former Senator Al Franken, who has publicly expressed regret over his resignation, are seen as possible contenders.

She also acknowledged the need for strong progressive leadership, stating, โ€œItโ€™s not lost on me that our country is in need of it right now, maybe more than ever.โ€

In a video announcing her retirement, Smith emphasized that her decision was personal, not political. โ€œAfter 20 years of hard and rewarding work in the public sector, Iโ€™m ready to spend more time with my family,โ€ she said. Smith, who has served in the Senate since 2018, added, โ€œWeโ€™re more than ready to take up the mantle of this seat, and all that will have to get worked out.โ€
