Auchincloss Slams Trump Over Rule of Law, Calls DOJ Order ‘Corrupt’

Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.) sharply criticized the Trump administration’s Justice Department for its decision to dismiss corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, calling it a direct attack on the rule of law.

In an interview on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday”, anchor Chris Stirewalt asked Auchincloss about the recent resignations of top federal prosecutors, who stepped down instead of complying with the controversial order.

Auchincloss: ‘Trump Replacing Rule of Law with Law of the Ruler’

Rep. Jake Auchincloss did not hold back in his response, stating:

“This president is replacing the rule of law with the law of the ruler.”

Auchincloss condemned Trump’s legal maneuvering, highlighting his pardoning of violent January 6 rioters, including those who attacked law enforcement. He also accused Trump of firing federal prosecutors and inspectors general without cause, and now strong-arming the Southern District of New York (SDNY) into dropping charges against Adams.

Trump DOJ Drops Corruption Charges Against Mayor Adams

The Trump Justice Department ordered federal prosecutors to drop all charges against Adams just months before his bribery trial was set to begin in April. The New York mayor had been indicted in September on charges of:
✔ Conspiracy to commit wire fraud
✔ Wire fraud
✔ Soliciting illegal contributions from a foreign national
✔ Bribery

Despite Adams’ denial of wrongdoing, the abrupt dismissal raised concerns of political interference. Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove justified the move by claiming the case interfered with Adams’ 2025 re-election campaign, and impacted his ability to address illegal immigration and violent crime, which Trump blamed on the previous administration.

Federal Prosecutors Resign in Protest

The DOJ’s decision triggered a wave of resignations from senior prosecutors, including the interim U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and assistant U.S. attorney Hagan Scotten, who led the Adams prosecution.

Scotten, a decorated Special Forces officer and former clerk for a conservative Supreme Court justice, resigned rather than comply. Auchincloss praised his integrity, quoting Scotten’s sharp rebuke of the DOJ order:

“Anybody who followed this order would be a fool or a coward.”

Auchincloss then challenged Republicans, saying:

“Hagan Scotten is no fool. He’s no coward. Can Republicans answer the same? Because right now, they look like both.”

Trump Denies Involvement, Calls Prosecutors ‘Expendable’

When questioned about the prosecutors’ resignations, Trump distanced himself from the case, claiming:

“I don’t know about it. Obviously, I’m not involved in that. But these are mostly people from the previous administration … They were all going to be gone anyway.”

Trump also suggested that the case against Adams was weak and that keeping it open would have been “unfair” during an election year.
