Canada Stands with Ukraine: Trudeau Promises Strong Response to Trump’s Tar1ffs
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine while warning of a firm and proportional response should the United States impose tariffs on Canadian goods. Speaking at the Securing Our Future Summit in London, Trudeau joined European and NATO leaders to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and broader geopolitical issues.
During the summit, Trudeau announced new sanctions targeting 10 individuals and 21 entities linked to Russia’s military operations. He highlighted that Canada has sanctioned over 3,000 individuals and organizations since the start of the conflict and pledged to continue applying economic pressure in coordination with allied nations.
Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty is a fight for freedom and democracy everywhere,” Trudeau stated. “Canada will stand with Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved.” He also addressed the future of international security assistance, emphasizing Canada’s nearly $20 billion in military, financial, and humanitarian aid since 2022. Additionally, he underscored the ongoing role of Operation UNIFIER, through which Canadian forces have trained over 44,000 Ukrainian troops since 2015.
On trade relations with the U.S., Trudeau acknowledged growing tensions and pointed to his government’s significant investments in border security, including $1.3 billion allocated for enhanced surveillance measures, drones, helicopters, and additional personnel.
“We all know the U.S. administration will make its own decisions regarding tariffs,” Trudeau said. “If tariffs are imposed on Tuesday, as we prepared to respond previously, Canadians can expect a strong, clear, and proportional response.”
While in London, Trudeau also held bilateral talks with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and is scheduled to meet with King Charles III before returning to Canada..
