MLN- 20 JAN 2026: A commuter train derailed near Barcelona, Spain, on Tuesday night after striking a retaining wall that collapsed onto the tracks, killing one person and injuring at least 37 others, authorities said.
The accident happened in the municipality of Gelida in the Catalonia region amid heavy rainfall, which officials said caused the wall to fall onto the rail line. Emergency responders treated more than three dozen injured passengers, and regional authorities suspended commuter services across parts of the network.
The fatality was identified as a train driver in training, according to local emergency officials, and at least 37 passengers sustained injuries, some serious, from the derailment.
Catalan emergency services deployed fire, ambulance and rescue teams to the scene as night fell. The derailment disrupted rail travel in and out of Barcelona on one of Spain’s busiest commuter corridors, sources said.
The crash occurred just two days after a separate high-speed rail disaster in southern Spain near Adamuz, Córdoba, that killed at least 42 people and injured hundreds when two trains collided on Sunday. That collision prompted a national mourning period and intensified scrutiny of rail safety across the country.
Transport authorities in Catalonia said preliminary investigations suggest the retaining wall collapse was linked to heavy rainfall, but a full inquiry into the cause of the derailment is ongoing.
Spain’s rail operator and regional officials have not yet released further details on the identities of the injured or a detailed timeline of events. Services on affected commuter lines remained suspended late Tuesday as crews worked to clear debris and restore tracks.
