Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed he will travel to Washington, D.C., next Tuesday, May 6, for a high-level meeting with President Donald Trump aimed at resolving escalating trade tensions.
The leaders are expected to address two major areas: targeted tariffs, including new fentanyl tariffs, and broader U.S.-Canada relations.
“There are immediate tariffs, both partial and so-called reciprocal and fentanyl tariffs, and then there is the broader relationship,” Mark Carney explained during a press conference. Asked about avoiding a diplomatic standoff,
Carney acknowledged the expected tension but said he was committed to “tough but constructive” talks with the US president. “You go into these meetings well prepared,” he added, pledging to act only in Canada’s best interests.
The planned visit follows Carney’s tough remarks earlier this week, in which he said Canada would “never” yield to US pressure, underscoring how trade disputes have become the focus of border diplomacy.
