Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly expressed concern that ongoing U.S. tariffs are complicating NATO discussions, making it difficult to focus on pressing security issues. In an interview with CNN,
Joly stated that the imposition of U.S. tariffs on most nations is not only harming global relations but also making it harder to focus on critical NATO issues like defense spending and security and impacting ordinary people.
She stressed Canadian’s efforts to urge President Trump to back off on the tariffs while remaining committed to finding a solution through diplomatic engagement.
“We want to be constructive,” Joly said. “We didn’t start this trade war, but we’re applying maximum pressure on the White House for President Trump to back off on tariffs. At the same time, we are willing to engage in discussions to find an exit strategy.”
For months, Joly has been outspoken against the U.S. tariffs on Canadian’s and Trump’s continued remarks about making Canada the 51st state.
The issues discussed at the NATO meeting this week include defense spending, Euro-Atlantic security, the situation in Ukraine, and growing concerns over threats from China and Russia.
“We need to ensure that we send tough messages to the U.S. while maintaining NATO unity,” Joly added. “We all agreed that we must leave this week’s NATO summit with a strong sense of unity.
As U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio managed the global fallout from President Donald Trump’s new tariffs while attending a busy NATO summit in Brussels, his Canadian counterpart expressed concerns about the difficulty of holding productive talks in the time of a trade war.
As NATO discussions centered on defense spending and security challenges from Russia and China, Joly underscored the importance of maintaining unity within the alliance. Despite the difficulties posed by the trade war, she remained determined to keep NATO’s Very strong and ensure that the alliance speaks with one voice on this time of critical global issues.
