Chicago Mayor Johnson Bans ICE From Using City Property

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has signed an executive order banning ICE from accessing or using any city-owned property, effective immediately.

The order bars federal immigration officers from entering municipal buildings, parks, and other city facilities without prior approval. In announcing the move, Johnson said it’s designed to protect immigrant communities from “coercive enforcement tactics” and restore trust in local government.

He added that Chicago police and local staff will not assist in ICE operations unless mandated by a court order.

The mayor’s decision comes amid growing tensions between federal immigration enforcement and sanctuary policies in major cities. City officials noted that similar measures have been blocked in the courts, but Johnson said the order is within the city’s authority to manage access to its property.

Chicago will not be complicit in federal overreach that hurts families,” Johnson said. “We will protect every resident’s right to feel safe in this city.”

The executive order is expected to trigger legal challenges by the Department of Justice. The coming weeks will test whether the city’s shield holds and how federal authorities respond.
