Washington, D.C. officials have taken action to clear a homeless encampment near the U.S. State Department, following a public ultimatum from President Donald Trump. The move comes after Trump called on city leaders to address the growing issue of homelessness in the nation’s capital.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Trump directly addressed D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, urging her to remove homeless encampments across the city or face federal intervention. On his platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “We have notified the Mayor of Washington, D.C., that she must clean up all of the unsightly homeless encampments in the City, specifically including the ones outside of the State Department, and near the White House.

If she is not capable of doing so, we will be forced to do it for her! Washington, D.C. must become CLEAN and SAFE! We want to be proud of our Great Capital again. Thank you Mayor Bowser for your efforts on behalf of the Citizens of our Country. Hopefully you will be successful

According to The Washington Post, the city had already planned to remove several encampments between February 27 and March 13. However, after Trump’s comments and a subsequent call with his administration, Bowser accelerated cleanup efforts near the State Department.

Despite Trump’s strong stance, Mayor Bowser has downplayed the idea that the city is acting under pressure. “Clearing homeless encampments is something we always do,” she stated. “We follow protocols that aim to provide housing solutions rather than simply displacing people.”

Bowser has shown some willingness to collaborate with the Trump administration on city improvements. In December, she described a meeting with Trump as “great” and discussed shared priorities for the capital. Additionally, Bowser recently announced plans to repaint the Black Lives Matter Plaza mural, which she had previously declared permanent. The mural will now be replaced as part of D.C.’s America 250 project, in preparation for the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
