Democratic donors are reducing funding to the DNC and progressive causes, citing the party’s failure to learn from past elections.
Donations to the Democratic Party and progressive causes from the left-wing donors have significantly slowed in recent weeks as President Donald Trump Solidifies his hold on the White House. Many left-leaning groups are now facing cash shortages, with small-dollar contributions drying up compared to the flood of donations during Trump’s first term.
Democratic Donors, According to the New York Times, Major Democratic backers have also paused their funding, expressing frustration over what they see as the party’s lack of visions and directions. Some longtime Democratic donors are even shifting their support to Trump, while others remain critical of Vice President Kamala Harris’s $1.5 billion campaign loss against him.
Democratic donors are scaling back contributions, with key figures like Reid Hoffman calling for a major overhaul of the party’s strategy. Notably, George Soros continues to support left-wing media, but other major backers are hesitant to fund political projects until reforms are made.
John Morgan , a wealthy Democratic donor and former vocal Supporter of President Joe Biden, told the Times, “For me, it’s going to be giving to people, not party,” adding, “The DNC learned nothing from the last election.” Morgan now identifies as an independent.
Democratic Donors: While it’s typical for donations to dip after a Presidential election, interviews with 50 donors, Democratic operatives, and activists reveal that contributions have slowed to a near halt. Some left-wing groups are redirecting their efforts toward preparing for legal battles against the Trump administration rather than funding the Democratic Party.
Progressive organizations are trimming their workforce as funding declines, with notable examples including the Human Rights Campaign, which laid off 20% of its staff, and the Center for American Progress, which reduced its staff by 8%. These moves come amid challenges from corporate rollbacks of DEI initiatives and a shifting political climate, prompting some Democratic donors to reassess their support for such organizations.
Democratic Donors consultant Robert Raben summed up the mood, stating, “People are mostly on the ropes, or on the mat waiting for leadership, scratching our heads and giving grace to Schumer and Jeffries, who are saying, ‘Pick your battles.’”
With Democratic Donors confidence at a low, the democratic Party faces mounting pressure to redefine its strategy and regain the trust of its financial backers.
