WASHINGTON—Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre left the Democratic Party and registered as an independent Wednesday.
Jean-Pierre announced her party change while revealing plans for a new book titled “Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines.”
“I determined that the danger we face as a country requires freeing ourselves of boxes,” Jean-Pierre said in a statement released by Legacy Lit publishing.
The publisher stated Jean-Pierre will describe the Democratic Party’s treatment of President Biden as a betrayal that forced him to end his reelection campaign.
Jean-Pierre served as White House press secretary from May 2022 to January 2025. She became the first Black woman and first openly LGBT person to hold the position.
Legacy Lit will release the book on October 21. The publisher said Jean-Pierre will detail the three weeks before Biden withdrew from the presidential race.
Jean-Pierre previously worked as senior adviser to Biden’s 2020 campaign and chief of staff to Vice President Kamala Harris.
She defended Biden against questions about his mental fitness throughout the 2024 campaign before his July withdrawal.
Jean-Pierre has not announced plans to join another political party.
