France and Allies Move to Recognize Palestinian State as UN Meetings Begin

Share

France and several other countries have announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state as the United Nations General Assembly opens in New York.

The coordinated step follows similar recognition moves earlier this year by Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal.

President Emmanuel Macron said France’s decision is aimed at reinforcing the two-state solution, isolating Hamas, and pressing for the release of hostages taken in the October 2023 attack.

He noted that the establishment of a Palestinian embassy in Paris would require the release of those hostages.

The announcements come as the conflict in Gaza continues, with heavy civilian casualties and widespread destruction fueling pressure for international action.

Supporters of recognition say the move is intended to restart momentum toward peace negotiations and provide Palestinians with stronger diplomatic standing.

Local support in France has been evident, with some mayors displaying the Palestinian flag on town halls even before the government’s announcement.

Officials said the recognition push reflects growing frustration with the lack of progress in resolving the conflict.
