GOP lawmaker says Senate is ‘very, very corrupt’ amid shutdown standoff

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna on Sunday sharply criticized the U.S. Senate, calling it “very, very corrupt” as a partial government shutdown drags on and tensions escalate between the two chambers of Congress.

In a lengthy post on the social platform X, the Florida Republican said some senators are deliberately blocking President Donald Trump’s agenda by refusing to weaken the filibuster.

“I also have respect for our Speaker, and this is not directed at him,” Luna wrote. “The Senate is very, very corrupt. Many of the Senators we would consider our ‘friends’ don’t want the filibuster removed because they don’t actually want President Trump’s agenda to succeed.”

“Many of these people have been in office for far too long and think they are the ones in power, not POTUS,” she added.

Luna’s remarks come days after Sen. Lindsey Graham temporarily blocked a government funding bill over language repealing a provision that allows senators to sue if their phone records were collected during the investigation led by former special counsel Jack Smith. That provision was included in legislation that ended last year’s shutdown, prompting anger among House members who were not granted similar protections.

Despite the dispute, the Senate voted Friday by a wide margin to pass a funding package containing five full-year appropriations bills and a two-week stopgap measure to fund the Department of Homeland Security.

Homeland Security has been under intense scrutiny in recent weeks over immigration enforcement tactics, particularly following two fatal shootings by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. The incidents have triggered bipartisan criticism and growing calls for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

The partial government shutdown is expected to continue until at least Tuesday. House Democrats have so far declined to commit the votes needed to fast-track final approval of the funding package and reopen the affected parts of the federal government.
