MLN -22 JAN 2026: A gunman remained at large Thursday after a shooting in the small town of Lake Cargelligo in Australia’s New South Wales state left three people dead and another seriously injured, police said.
Emergency services were called shortly after 4 p.m. to two separate locations in Lake Cargelligo, a town of about 1,500 residents, where two couples were shot within minutes of each other, Police Assistant Commissioner Andy Holland told reporters.
Both women and one man died at the scenes, while another man was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition, Holland said.
Police said they know the identity of a suspect but have not released the name and do not yet know the suspect’s relationship to the victims, who were all local residents.
State police deployed additional resources from neighboring districts, including heavily armed tactical officers, and cordoned off the town to prevent the suspect from escaping, Holland said. Authorities believe the suspect fled the area in a vehicle.
Police sent geo-targeted emergency text messages urging residents to stay indoors and avoid the area. Local businesses, including the Commercial Hotel, were closed as a precaution.
“The offender is believed to have fled in a vehicle,” Holland said. “The offender is mobile, hence we’re asking people in those areas to remain inside their premises for their own safety.”
Local resident Manisha, who declined to give her surname, told The Daily Telegraph that police vehicles and ambulances were, all over town, adding that sirens could be heard throughout the community.
New South Wales lawmaker Roy Butler described the incident as “tragic news” for the town, which is about 600 kilometers west of Sydney, in comments to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
The shooting occurred on a National Day of Mourning in Australia commemorating victims of a separate mass shooting in Sydney last month. Earlier this week, Australia’s parliament passed new gun restrictions following that attack.
