House Democrats are reportedly close to the votes needed to impeach Trump

House Democratic leaders are moving forward with impeachment efforts against President Donald Trump and say they are only a few votes short of the majority needed to approve articles of impeachment, according to multiple congressional sources familiar with internal discussions.
Democrats control the House by a narrow margin, and leaders have signaled they are working to secure every possible Democratic vote as well as potential support from a small number of Republican defectors to reach the 218 votes required for impeachment.
Several moderate and district-focused Democrats have expressed reservations about moving forward without clear bipartisan support, making the final stretch sensitive.
Some lawmakers have suggested that securing two or three additional votes from hesitant members could push the chamber over the threshold before a March 31 deadline set by Democratic leadership for completing the process.
Speaker of the House leaders have declined to comment on specific vote counts, saying only that they are “engaged in active conversations with members across the aisle and within the Democratic conference” and that they will proceed if they believe there is sufficient support.
Impeachment efforts have intensified in recent weeks amid ongoing investigations and public scrutiny over Trump administration actions. Democrats say the process is a constitutional safeguard, while Republicans have dismissed it as politically motivated.
A final vote in the House would represent a significant escalation in congressional opposition to the president, but even if passed, impeachment in the House does not necessarily mean conviction in the Republican-controlled Senate.
