Iran Meets UN Nuclear Watchdog in Geneva Ahead of Second Round of U.S. Talks

Iran’s top diplomat met with the head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog in Geneva on Monday as a second round of indirect nuclear negotiations with the United States approaches, officials said.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held discussions with International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi on technical aspects of Tehran’s nuclear program a day before U.S. and Iranian envoys are set to resume talks in the Swiss city.
The meeting comes as both sides seek progress on longstanding disputes over Iran’s nuclear activities while tensions in the Middle East remain high.
Araghchi posted on the social platform X that he was in Geneva “with real ideas to achieve a fair and equitable deal” but said submission to pressure was “not on the table.” Iran is seeking sanctions relief in exchange for commitments on its nuclear program, while Washington has insisted on strict limits including on uranium enrichment as a condition for any agreement.
The talks are being mediated by Oman and mark the latest effort in a series of diplomatic engagements that aim to reduce tensions and avert a potential conflict.
The negotiations follow earlier rounds this year and come against the backdrop of increased U.S. military deployments in the region, including the movement of additional naval forces to the Middle East.
