Italy stops escorting Gaza Flotilla 150 nautical miles away

The Italian Navy announced that it would stop escorting the Global Sumud ship when it came within 150 nautical miles of the Gaza coast, citing concerns about a diplomatic incident with Israel.

According to the Italian Defence Ministry, the naval frigate accompanying the convoy will issue two warnings before disengagement, with the final one expected around 00:00 GMT.

The move is aimed at reducing risks of confrontation while maintaining a protective presence in international waters.

Italy also warned the flotilla that they will receive a radio call to turn back before entering a so-called “critical zone. According to the Reuters

Italian officials described the decision as necessary to avoid a “diplomatic incident” with Israel, emphasizing that the escort was intended for safety rather than political tension.

With the flotilla nearing the 150-mile mark, organizers must decide whether to proceed without naval protection — a step likely to escalate tensions — or reroute to alternate aid delivery channels.
