Mamdani endorses Hochul in New York governor’s race

MLN: 05/02/2026 New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed Gov. Kathy Hochul’s reelection bid, giving the Democratic governor a notable boost with progressive voters as she faces a primary challenge and a competitive general election later this year

In an op-ed published in The Nation, Mamdani said the Democratic Party works best when it channels internal disagreement toward progress, writing, “At its best, the Democratic Party has been a big tent not because it avoids conflict, but because it channels conflict toward progress.

He said his work with Hochul showed how that approach could deliver results, adding that their collaboration was, built on candor and focused on policies that working people can feel in daily life.

Mamdani pointed to expanded free universal childcare as a shared early achievement, saying the policy would not have advanced as quickly without Hochul’s commitment to state funding.

He also acknowledged areas of disagreement, including over proposals to raise taxes on wealthy New Yorkers, but said productive cooperation required trust even when views differ. “We must be able to disagree honestly while still delivering for the people we serve,” he wrote.

Hochul welcomed the endorsement, saying she was grateful for Mamdani’s partnership on childcare and that she expected him to support her as she confronts policy disputes with President Donald Trump’s administration.
