Melinda French Gates says Epstein files revived “painful times” in marriage

MLN,04/02/2026 Melinda French Gates said the release of newly unsealed U.S. Justice Department records linked to Jeffrey Epstein brought back difficult memories from her marriage to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, calling the period deeply painful.

Speaking on NPR’s Wild Card podcast, she said she felt “unbelievable sadness” and that “whatever questions remain” should be answered by those named in the records, including her former husband. She added, “I am so happy to be away from all the muck.” The couple divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage.

The Justice Department records include emails attributed to Epstein that reference Bill Gates, including claims that his representatives have denied. Gates has not been accused of wrongdoing by any of Epstein’s victims, and his name appearing in the files does not imply criminal conduct.

A spokesperson for Gates described claims attributed to Epstein as “absolutely absurd” and false, saying the documents reflected Epstein’s frustration at not maintaining a relationship with Gates.

In a separate interview with Australian broadcaster 9News, Gates said his interactions with Epstein were limited to dinners and that he did not visit Epstein’s private island, adding, “Every minute I spent with him I regret and I apologise that I did that.”

Gates and his representatives have previously said the meetings were related to a philanthropy project that did not move forward.
