Demonstrations are planned across the United States this weekend following two separate shootings involving federal immigration authorities in Minneapolis and Portland, According to AP
Organizers say protests are scheduled for Saturday in multiple states, including Minnesota, Oregon, Texas, New Mexico, Ohio and Florida, with additional actions expected in other cities.
The demonstrations follow a deadly encounter earlier this week in Minneapolis and a second incident a day later in Portland.
In Minneapolis, an officer with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement fatally shot Renee Good during a federal operation. Authorities said the agent acted in self-defense, while community leaders and advocacy groups have called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Tensions escalated overnight as police arrested several demonstrators who refused orders to disperse.
In Portland, federal immigration agents shot and wounded two people inside a vehicle outside a hospital, according to officials. Details surrounding that encounter remain under review, and no charges have been announced as of Saturday.
The planned protests are being led by Indivisible, a national progressive advocacy group, with support from the American Civil Liberties Union and the protest network 50501. Organizers say the demonstrations are intended to honor those affected by the shootings and to push for accountability from federal agencies.
“This weekend, people across the country are coming together to grieve, honor those we’ve lost, and demand accountability from a system that has operated with impunity for far too long,” Indivisible co-executive director Leah Greenberg said in a statement.
Greenberg added that the group views the recent shootings as part of a broader pattern of harm linked to immigration enforcement practices, emphasizing the impact on families and communities.
The ACLU echoed those concerns, calling for transparency and formal investigations into both incidents. Deirdre Schifeling, the organization’s chief political and advocacy officer, said the shootings have heightened fears in communities already wary of federal immigration operations.
“The shootings in Minneapolis and Portland were not the beginning of ICE’s cruelty, but they need to be the end,” Schifeling said. “Americans across the country are demanding that this stop.”
Protest organizers say their goals include pressuring elected officials, seeking changes to immigration enforcement practices and reducing the presence of federal agents in local communities. The demonstrations come after a series of nationwide protests last year targeting broader policies of the Trump administration.
Authorities in several cities said they are preparing for large crowds this weekend, urging demonstrators to remain peaceful as events unfold.
