China will provide parents with 3,600 yuan ($500) annually for each child under age three, state media announced Monday.

The subsidy applies retroactively from January 1, 2025, according to state broadcaster CCTV. All children under three are eligible, regardless of birth order.

The Communist Party and State Council jointly approved the nationwide policy. The subsidies aim to reduce childcare costs for families across the country.

China’s population declined for the third consecutive year. The country recorded 9.54 million births last year, compared to 19 million in 2016.

The population decreased by 1.39 million people in 2023. India surpassed China as the world’s most populous nation.

United Nations data projects China’s population could drop from 1.4 billion to 800 million by 2100.

Over 20 provincial governments currently offer childcare subsidies. Local programs vary in payment amounts and eligibility requirements.

Hohhot offers up to 100,000 yuan for families with three children. First children receive 10,000 yuan and second children get 50,000 yuan.

Shenyang provides 500 yuan monthly for third children until age three. Hangzhou gives a one-time 25,000 yuan payment for third children.

Premier Li Qiang announced plans for childcare subsidies in March. The new policy establishes uniform payments nationwide.

China has 310 million residents aged 60 and above. Marriage and birth rates have reached historic lows in recent years.
