NYC Mayor’s Equity Appointee Faces Scrutiny Over Past Social Media Posts

MLN — 19 JAN 2026: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s newly appointed chief equity officer, Afua Atta-Mensah, is facing criticism after past posts from a now-deactivated social media account circulated online, days after her appointment, according to reporting and statements from political groups monitoring City Hall.

Atta-Mensah, who was named to the role last week, had previously shared and responded to posts critical of white liberals and non-profit culture, language that critics say is divisive.

Screenshots circulated by political opponents show Atta-Mensah endorsing comments that described “white liberal racism” and boosting posts that compared some white women in non-profit organizations to figures associated with racially charged incidents. The X account was taken down within about a week of her appointment.

Some of the resurfaced comments also included strong rhetoric about wealth redistribution and political ideology, including language advocating aggressive taxation of the wealthy and rejecting moderation in racial justice movements. Several of the posts date back multiple years, according to critics who reviewed the account’s history.

Mayor Mamdani praised Atta-Mensah at the time of her appointment, saying she was the person he trusted most to advance racial equity across City Hall and citing her career in public service. The mayor’s office said it did not instruct appointees to delete social media accounts, according to officials familiar with the response.

The controversy comes as Mamdani’s administration continues to face scrutiny over prior appointments. Another senior appointee, tenant advocate Cea Weaver, previously drew criticism for social media posts calling for the seizure of private property and sharply criticizing policing. Mamdani defended Weaver at the time, saying her views reflected advocacy positions rather than policy directives.

Critics say the repeated controversies raise questions about vetting within City Hall, while supporters argue the focus on old posts distracts from policy goals. The mayor’s office has not indicated whether it plans to review Atta-Mensah’s appointment as the debate continues.
