US and Russia’s Carry Out Prisoner Swap Involving Ksenia Karelina, a Russian-American woman accused of treason by the Moscow government, has been freed in a prisoner exchange, according to Russian and U.S. officials.

In a statement on X, the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Karelina is “on a plane back to the United States.”

She was arrested in the city of Yekaterinburg, in Russia’s Ural Mountains, in February 2024, and convicted of treason over a donation of about $52 to a charity supporting Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that Arthur Petrov had been released by the U.S. Petrov was arrested in Cyprus in August 2023 at the request of the U.S. authorities, accused of smuggling sensitive microelectronics into Russia. He was extradited to the United States a year later.

The exchange, which took place in the United Arab Emirates, comes as the Trump administration seeks to ease tensions with Moscow in hopes of brokering a long-elusive peace deal in Ukraine.
