Protesters gathered today in front of the White House to protest against the policies of President Donald Trump, accusing his administration of abusing its power and undermining democratic institutions.

The protest was part of a coordinated national effort known as the 50501 movement, short for “50 protests, 50 states, movement 1” which follows a recent wave of “Hands Off!” protests across the country. Today’s gathering focused on key issues, including immigration enforcement, federal agency cuts, and threats to higher education.

One of the protesters, Bob, a 64-year-old Defense Department employee, said he was forced to take action to rally for a political cause for the first time in his life.

Bob said the Trump administration’s cuts to the Department of Defense were the last straw. “Veterans who serve our country have earned their benefits; they deserve to be given them,” he said.

Bob also cited the financial losses to his retirement fund, blaming Trump’s unpredictable pricing and tariff decisions for damaging his 401(k). He said they have forced him to postpone his retirement and consider taking a second job. according to cnn

Emily Yanisko, a professor at American University, said she joined the Protesters after Harvard University stood against the Trump administration’s recent demands. “It’s about standing up for academic freedom,” she told CNN
