The captain of the Solong cargo ship, a Russian national, has been arrested following a collision with the US-flagged tanker Stena Immaculate off the English coast. According to CNN, the crash, which set both vessels ablaze, occurred while the Stena Immaculate was anchored in the North Sea carrying jet fuel for the US military.

British authorities have launched a criminal investigation, arresting the 59-year-old captain on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

Despite modern shipping technology, experts are baffled by how the collision happened. Martyn Boyers, CEO of Port of Grimsby East, questioned why warning systems failed, Saying, “It seems a mystery…

There must have been warning signs.” Meanwhile, the Solong continues to burn more than a day after the crash, and one crew member is presumed dead after rescue efforts were called off. The Stena Immaculate’s 23-member crew and 13 crew members from the Solong were safely evacuated.

Environmental concerns are rising, with Oceanu UK warning of potential damage if jet fuel spills into the sea. Earlier fears that the Solong carried sodium cyanide were later dismissed, with its owners clarifying that only empty containers of the chemical were on board.

As investigations continue, authorities are working to determine how this disaster unfolded.
