Senate

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee has invited Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to testify about sweeping changes within his department. The bipartisan request from Chair Bernie Sanders and Ranking Member Bill Cassidy follows HHS’s decision to cut 10,000 jobs Reducing its workforce by more than 12% and consolidate divisions from 28 to 15. The restructuring also introduces a new agency,

The Administration for a Healthy America, aimed at tackling chronic diseases. Kennedy, a known vaccine skeptic, also stirred controversy last week by ousting the FDA’s top vaccine official.

Senator Cassidy, who supported Kennedy’s confirmation under certain assurances, said his call for testimony is not driven by suspicion but by a need for clarity. He emphasized that Kennedy had already committed to quarterly hearings, and this session will allow him to explain the rationale behind the changes.

While Republicans are taking a measured approach, Democrats remain strongly opposed, arguing that the restructuring undermines public health and congressional oversight.
