Senator Ed Markey Calls for Trump’s Removal Under the 25th Amendment

Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey has officially called for the invocation of the U.S. Constitution’s 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office, citing concerns about the president’s recent actions, according to public statements and reports.

Markey, a Democrat said the 25th Amendment should be invoked because he believes Trump’s behavior, particularly comments tied to geopolitical issues such as Greenland, raise questions about his fitness to serve as commander-in-chief.

The 25th Amendment allows for the president’s removal if the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet determine the president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office.”

Calls from Markey and other Democrats follow a controversial message Trump sent to foreign leaders earlier this year that critics described as erratic, prompting debate about presidential fitness under constitutional provisions.

While the amendment provides a legal avenue for removal, its invocation would require Vice President JD Vance and most Cabinet members to agree, a threshold never previously met in American history.

Markey’s public appeal to “invoke the 25th Amendment” adds to broader Democratic criticism of Trump’s conduct, but there is no indication that the vice president or Cabinet have moved toward initiating the formal process.
