Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen released photos of his meeting with Kilmar Ábrego García, who the administration has refused to return to the United States despite a federal judge’s order.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, 29, lived in eastern Maryland until he was one of more than 200 people sent to a prison in El Salvador last month as part of Trump’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen tweeted a photo of his meeting with Garcia on Thursday, which appeared to be at a restaurant. and he wrote

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele also posted photos of the meeting between Van Hollen and Garcia, saying, “Now that he’s been confirmed healthy, he gets the honor of staying in El Salvador’s prison.” The post ended with emojis of the American and El Salvadoran flags, with a handshake emoji between them.

The White House called his visit “disgusting,” saying it shows Democrats are siding with “illegal alien MS-13 terrorists” while President Trump stands with law-abiding Americans.

officials have said Garcia has ties to the MS-13 gang, but his lawyers say the government has not presented any evidence of that, and Garcia has never been charged with any crime in connection with that activity.
