Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins revealed enforcement actions against food stamps for illegal immigrants have already begun in Minnesota, New York and Colorado. “We’re just getting started in our fight against food stamp fraud by illegal immigrants,” Rollins stated, promising an “extremely aggressive” nationwide effort that could save taxpayers billions.
The new policy requires states to verify immigration status through Homeland Security’s SAVE system when applicants seek food stamps. Illegal immigrants have always been ineligible for SNAP benefits under the 1996 Welfare Reform Act, but the Trump administration argues lax enforcement allowed abuse of the food stamp program.
