Trump Declines to Say Whether He Would Use Force to Take Greenland

MLN — 20 JAN 2026: President Donald Trump declined to say Monday whether he would use military force to seize control of Greenland, responding “no comment” when asked directly in an interview with NBC News.

Trump made the remarks as he continues to press for the United States to acquire the Arctic territory, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. In the interview, Trump said he “100 percent” plans to move forward with new tariffs against Denmark and other European countries if negotiations over Greenland do not produce an agreement.

Those tariffs are scheduled to take effect Feb. 1 and would also impact Norway. Trump recently sent a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that has drawn scrutiny after appearing to link U.S. pressure over Greenland to Trump not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

Store and other officials have noted that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee, not the Norwegian government. Trump disputed that characterization in the NBC News interview, saying, “Norway totally controls it despite what they say.” He also told the outlet that he does not care about the prize.

Trump’s comments have prompted pushback from European leaders and criticism from some U.S. officials, as concerns grow over the potential impact on transatlantic relations. Denmark has repeatedly rejected the idea of selling Greenland, and European Union officials have stressed that the territory’s sovereignty is not negotiable.

The issue is expected to draw further attention this week as Trump prepares to address the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Global political and business leaders are gathering there amid heightened tensions over trade, security and the future of U.S.-European relations.
