Trump “You look at each country and see what they’re charging us. In nearly every case, they’re charging us far more than we charge them. Those days are behind us.”

The directive assigns Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and global trade representative Jamieson Greer to assess potential “remedies” to achieve balanced trade, with a deadline of 180 days.
“On trade, I have decided, in the interest of fairness, to implement a reciprocal tariff,” Trump announced Thursday. “Whatever countries charge the United States, we will charge them—no more, no less. If they tax our goods, we will impose the exact same tax on theirs. It’s very simple.
Nobody Knows the exactly umber offhand they are charging us … but if you look at each country individually, you’ll see they’re charging us significantly more than we charge them. Those days are over.”
“For U.S. policy purposes, we will treat countries using the VAT system—which is far more punitive than a tariff—similarly to tariffs,” Trump posted. “Sending goods through another country to unfairly harm America will not be tolerated. Additionally, we will account for subsidies provided by other nations to exploit the U.S. economy.”
Additionally, Russ Vought, Trump’s nominee for the Office of Management and Budget, will assess the fiscal impact of these measures and deliver a report within the same timeframe.
