President Donald Trump said Monday he plans to meet with representatives from the U.S. film industry to discuss his proposal to impose a new tax on films produced abroad – a move aimed at boosting domestic film production.
“Hollywood doesn’t do very much of that business. They have the nice sign and everything’s good, but they don’t do very much,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, referencing the entertainment industry’s reputation while noting the shift of film production overseas.
“We’re going to meet with the industry. I want to make sure they’re happy with it, because we’re all about jobs,” Trump said.
The comment came a day after the president floated the idea of taxing films made by foreigners in a social media post. While the White House has made it clear that no final decision has been made, Trump said he wants to hear directly from filmmakers before moving forward.
The president framed the initiative as part of a broader effort to revitalize California’s film industry, which has seen a growing number of productions move to other states due to cost incentives and tax benefits.
