President Donald Trump said his administration is reviewing the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old man by a federal Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis and will determine whether the agent acted appropriately.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Sunday, Trump declined to say whether the agent was justified in the shooting of Alex Pretti, despite other administration officials describing the action as self-defense.
“We’re looking, we’re reviewing everything and will come out with a determination,” Trump told the newspaper when asked about the agent’s conduct.
Trump said he opposed shootings in general but criticized Pretti for carrying a firearm at the protest where he was killed.
“I don’t like any shooting. I don’t like it,” Trump said. “But I don’t like it when somebody goes into a protest and he’s got a very powerful, fully loaded gun with two magazines loaded up with bullets also. That doesn’t play good either.”
The Department of Homeland Security has said the agent fired “defensive shots” and that a gun was recovered at the scene. Pretti, an intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital, was licensed to carry the firearm.
Critics dispute the government’s account, citing video that appears to show Pretti filming immigration officers with his phone before the encounter escalated.
The shooting has intensified tensions in Minneapolis, where protests have continued following the earlier killing of another resident, Renee Good, during an immigration enforcement operation.
Trump said federal immigration officers may eventually withdraw from the city but did not provide a timeline.
“At some point we will leave. We’ve done, they’ve done a phenomenal job,” he said.
