President Donald Trump said early Tuesday he agreed to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and other European allies at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss the future of Greenland.
Trump said the decision followed what he described as a “very good telephone call” with Rutte, according to a late-night post on Truth Social.
“I agreed to a meeting of the various parties in Davos, Switzerland,” Trump wrote. “As I expressed to everyone, very plainly, Greenland is imperative for National and World Security. There can be no going back , On that, everyone agrees”
Trump added that U.S. military strength underpins global stability.
“The United States of America is the most powerful Country anywhere on the Globe, by far,” Trump wrote. “We are the only power that can ensure peace throughout the World, And it is done, quite simply, through strength”
In a separate post, Trump shared a screenshot of a text exchange with Rutte in which the NATO chief praised Trump’s handling of international crises.
“I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work there, in Gaza, and in Ukraine,” Rutte wrote, according to the screenshot.
“I am committed to finding a way forward with you on Greenland. Can’t wait to see you,” Rutte added.
Trump’s comments come as European leaders have pushed back against his repeated calls for the United States to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The issue is expected to be raised during meetings in Davos as global leaders gather amid rising tensions over trade, security and territorial sovereignty.
