MLN -24 JAN 2026:Ukraine condemned a wave of overnight Russian strikes that killed one person and injured at least 23 others, as U.S. led talks aimed at ending the war resumed for a second day, according to Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the attack was “brutal” and had “hit not only our people, but also the negotiation table,”
Delegations from Ukraine, Russia and the United States met in Abu Dhabi for the second day of talks, the first trilateral discussions since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. A source familiar with the talks told the BBC that some progress had been made, but territorial issues remained unresolved.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one person was killed and four others were wounded in the capital, adding that three of the injured were hospitalized. He said damage to critical infrastructure left about 6,000 buildings without heating amid subzero temperatures.
In eastern Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said 19 people were injured during strikes that damaged a maternity hospital and a hostel for displaced people.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia’s main target was Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Russia currently occupies about 20% of Ukraine’s territory and has demanded Kyiv cede large areas, a condition Ukraine has rejected.
Following the first day of talks, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said discussions focused on “the parameters for ending Russia’s war” and advancing toward “a dignified and lasting peace.”
