MLN -30 JAN 2026: Ukraine reported a relatively quiet night of air attacks after President Donald Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed not to strike Kyiv and other cities during an extreme cold spell, though the Kremlin offered only limited confirmation and Ukrainian officials said no formal agreement was in place.

Trump said during a televised Cabinet meeting in Washington on Thursday that he personally asked Putin to halt attacks on Kyiv and “various towns” for a week and that the Russian leader agreed. “I personally asked President Putin not to fire into Kyiv and the various towns for a week, and he agreed to do that,” Trump said. “It was very nice.”

The Kremlin confirmed Friday that it had received a request from Trump but declined to specify what, if anything, had been agreed. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin was asked to pause strikes on Kyiv until Feb. 1 to create conditions for peace talks but offered no further details.

Ukraine’s air force said more than 100 drones and one ballistic missile were launched overnight, mostly targeting areas near the front lines. Air raid alerts were issued in eight regions, and officials reported two minor injuries in the Zaporizhzhia region. As of Friday morning, there were no new strikes reported on electricity or heating infrastructure, which Russia has repeatedly targeted during winter cold spells.

Kyiv is bracing for temperatures expected to fall as low as minus 24 degrees Celsius (minus 11 Fahrenheit). Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 378 apartment buildings in the capital remain without heating following earlier attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Trump had made an “important statement” about the possibility of providing security for Kyiv and other cities during the extreme winter period, but he cautioned there was no direct agreement with Moscow. Zelensky told reporters Ukraine would respond in kind if Russia refrained from attacking energy infrastructure.

Kyiv residents expressed skepticism. “I don’t believe that Putin will stop even for a week,” said Olena, a Kyiv resident. “We have seen so many talks and deals but, nevertheless, he continues to do what he wants.”

Russian, Ukrainian and U.S. negotiators held trilateral talks in the United Arab Emirates last week, the first since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. All sides described the discussions as constructive, but no ceasefire was announced. A second round of talks planned for Sunday may be postponed, Zelensky said, citing broader geopolitical tensions.

Russia controls about 20% of Ukraine’s territory, including much of the eastern Donbas region. Zelensky reiterated Friday that Ukraine would not cede territory as part of any settlement. “We are not ready for compromises that violate territorial integrity,” he said.
