The acting US attorney in Washington, DC, Ed Martin, announced in an internal memo that his office is investigating “leaks that took place during the January 6th prosecutions.” The memo, obtained by CNN, describes this as part of a broader review of how the cases were handled under the Biden administration.
Martin previously launched an investigation into prosecutors who charged rioters under US Code 1512(c), an obstruction statute. Those charges were later dismissed due to a Supreme Court ruling. Now, Martin says the investigation “is expanded in scope.”
In his memo, Martin wrote that “leaks of evidence, tactics and other aspects of the effort damaged the parties, witnesses and (law enforcement officers) and all of this was used by the media and partisans as misinformation.” He did not specify who requested the investigation or cite particular leaks but stated that the situation “was bad all around.”
Martin’s office has not responded to requests for comment. In his initial announcement of the probe in January, he instructed prosecutors involved in obstruction cases to turn over documents and correspondence to two senior members of his team.
