U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Wednesday to chart next steps in implementing the Gaza cease-fire agreement, focusing on civil governance and security arrangements for the enclave,
During the session, Vance emphasized the dual U.S. objective of dismantling Hamas’s military capabilities while laying the groundwork for rebuilding Gaza under a new security framework.
Netanyahu said the two leaders discussed a “new vision” for post-conflict Gaza that defines how governance and security responsibilities will be structured over time.
He also voiced opposition to including Turkey in any future security force, citing Israel’s preference for direct oversight.
Vance outlined the administration’s plan to establish an international civilian-military coordination center that will help oversee reconstruction and monitor compliance with the cease-fire.
He said the effort will involve regional partners and stressed that “these are days of destiny” for achieving lasting peace in the region.
Israeli officials said detailed working groups will be formed within days to formalize the “day after” phase of governance in Gaza.
“We have a very, very tough task ahead of us, which is to disarm Hamas but rebuild Gaza to make life better for the people of Gaza, but also to ensure that Hamas is no longer a threat to our friends in Israel,” Vance said.
