Saudi Arabia’s role as a mediator in high-stakes talks between U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian officials highlights its growing influence in global diplomacy. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Jeddah ahead of key discussions between top U.S. and Ukrainian officials.

This follows Riyadh’s recent mediation between American and Russian officials, marking the first direct talks between Washington and Moscow since the Ukraine war began.

The kingdom’s neutrality, strong ties with both U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and its economic clout make it a strategic choice for mediation.

Prince Mohammed has balanced relationships with major global powers while steering Saudi Arabia towards economic diversification under “Vision 2030.”

Saudi Arabia’s ambitions go beyond Ukraine. The kingdom aims to use its growing diplomatic influence to shape regional policies, particularly regarding the Gaza conflict. By playing a role in resolving global disputes, Riyadh seeks to enhance its international standing while securing goodwill in Washington.
